SWP Public Meeting: Raunch culture, old school sexism, Tory assault: Why we won't "calm down dear"!
Celebrating the socialist tradition of International Women's Day
International Women's Day (IWD) was born out of struggle over 100 years ago. Thousands of women textile workers had struck in New York to win better pay and conditions. Socialists in Europe, inspired by their famous victory, then chose to celebrate IWD on its anniversary.
But women's oppression is still a reality today. Women are paid less than men, are blamed for rape, women's bodies are commodified and judged, and only 22% of MPs are women. The Tory assault will hit women hard - trying to roll back the clock on abortion rights, demanding sexual abstinence in young women and slashing our pay, pensions and services.
Women are playing a leading role in the fightback - from the revolution in Egypt to the N30 strikes in Britain and the "slutwalks" against blaming women for rape.
Women's oppression is deeply rooted in society. But where does it come from? Do men benefit from sexism or can they be part of the solution? How do we fight, not only against the Tory cuts, but for real sexual freedom too?
Come to this meeting to celebrate International Women's Day and discuss the socialist tradition of fighting for women's liberation.
